Majority black districts are necessary to ensure the equitable
representation of African Americans. These districts are under
attack today by conservative scholars and a conservative United
States Supreme Court. Critics of race-conscious congressional
districting argue that blacks can win election from majority white
districts. Factors such as continued racial segregation, the
existence of racial bloc voting by whites, and lack of minority
success absent race-conscious remedies, however, provide strong
evidence that the case for majority black districts remains
compelling.
The books provides a detailed analysis of the politics of racial
redistricting, a topic of particular concern in light of recent
federal court cases. The book is divided into two parts. Part one
examines the historical exclusion of blacks from the American
political process and the politics behind congressional
redistricting. Investigation of the politics behind redistricting,
focusing on partisan maneuvering, assesses whose interests were
being served. In particular, the book chronicles the legislative
action (creation of majority black districts) in North Carolina and
around the South.
Part two shifts the focus to the myriad of legal battles that
ensued as a result of the newly created districts in North Carolina
and around the South. Majority black districts are being dismantled
the Supreme Court because of criticism of their shape and because
race was considered a predominant factor in their design.
Irregularly shaped majority white districts have not been accused
of violating districting principles. Furthermore, the fact that
blacks were not elected to national office in large numbers prior
to the creation of majority black districts indicates the
continuing need for race-conscious districting as a temporary
solution to a complex problem.

In the early twenty-first century, race still occupies a
dominant role in American politics. Despite this truism,
presidential candidate Barack Obama was uniquely poised to
transcend both race and party as the first African American to have
a realistic chance of winning the presidency. Previous contenders
running in the traditional mode of the Civil Rights Movement based
their appeal primarily on African American voters. Obama, on the
other hand, ran a deracialized campaign in an effort to appeal to
voters of different backgrounds and political parties.
Clayton examines how race in American politics has changed over
time and offers an explanation for why Obama's candidacy offers a
different roadmap for the future. The Presidential Campaign of
Barack Obama provides students of politics, inside and outside of
the classroom, a unique opportunity to explore the institutional
and structural challenges an African American faces in becoming the
president of the United States. This guide to major issues in Black
politics and the ins and outs of the 2008 campaign provides the
necessary contours for understanding how the highest elected
African American official won office.
Series Information: Race and Politics
This book sets out a systematic way to understand who you need to
influence, how to evaluate the priority you give to each person,
what tactics will work the best, and how to plan and execute your
campaign. It provides powerful tools and processes which use the
psychology of influence and grounds them in experience of managing
projects and change.
One of the central debates within contemporary Anglo-American political philosophy concerns how to formulate an egalitarian theory of distributive justice which gives coherent expression to egalitarian convictions and withstands the most powerful anti-egalitarian objections. This book brings together many of the key contributions to that debate by some of the world's leading political philosophers.

The question of how to distribute benefits and burdens between
different individuals and groups has exercised some of the greatest
philosophers of the past, and dominates the study of contemporary
political philosophy. This volume brings together some of the most
creative contributions to one of the most intellectually fertile,
and politically significant, areas of debate in practical
philosophy.
Beginning with two classic discussions by Locke and Hume, the
volume then turns to contemporary theories of social justice,
focusing on Rawls, Nozick, Dworkin, and some of their most
influential critics. It concludes with a set of provocative
readings on various specific issues - the family, market
incentives, world poverty, cultural rights, and future generations
- that have extended or challenged common conceptions of
justice.
With an introductory essay and a guide to further reading,
Social Justice will appeal to students in law, politics, and
normative economics, as well as philosophy.
